Evinrude 50 Reverse Problem Hello, My Evinrude outboard
50 is not responding in reverse -- it slips out if I give it any amount of
gas. It barely works at idle speed. I'm guessing the
clutch dog is causing this. Do you know if I need any special tools to
realign the lower shaft and gear assembly after I repair the clutch? If
yes, where do I get the tool? Thank you, Brian Brian, If
your gearcase is slipping out of reverse like you say, the damage is done
and the reverse gear will also show damage. 50% of the time we have been
able to remachine the clutch dog contact area (in the gear) to the
original "square" shape. Your machinist can tell you upon
inspection. There is no tool to "realign" the shaft as it only
goes in one way. The only shimming involved is the pinion height and you
are not changing the gear set so far. Change the clutch, machine the
reverse gear, and after assembly make sure the F-N-R spacing is correct in
your controls. The problem should go away and stay away.
