I have a 1987 Checkmate Starliner that I had to
repower. I found a leftover Merc. 3.0L 225 EFI. It is mounted on a CMC
hydraulic jackplate with about 5 1/2" setback. I'm running a 23"
Tempest Plus and have seen 68 mph on the speedometer at 5800 RPM. How much
additional setback would you recommend to start with this setup? Any
additional comments or opinions on how to improve performance would be
greatly appreciated. I know it's not a Hydrostream (which is what I wish I
had) but it's what I have and it is very versatile with all of the
accessories I have on it.
Oddly enough we do all the
rigging for Checkmate boats of Fargo. Have rigged quite a few of them and
the 5 1/2 inches is enough. With a 26 or 27 trophy we run in the mid to
upper 70's. With a 27" laser 2 we ran 73mph. All more set back did
was make the boat run stupid in the mid range speeds and the hole shot
disappeared. All of them now have the CMC 5 1/2 plate on them. Granted
your boat is not "new", it is of the same basic design. Try some
bigger props as the rev limiter is right where you are.
