Viking Steering
Hi Randy,
I have a 77 Viking with a 78 Merc 175, The boat has not seen water in
several years and I have a major restoration project on hand, mostly
cosmetic on the hull, the Merc runs, but could use a rebuild. First,
I have the original dual cable steering with a Kiekhaefer Mercury steering
helm and opposing cables. The port side cable is frozen and I need to
replace it, the problem is that my local Merc dealer can not find a cable
that will fit my older steering system. I would hate to change the
entire system, does Teleflex or anyone make a cable that will fit this
older system? Also, would the Viking benefit with a jackplate
and setback, and do you have any suggestions on setup for my stream?
Thanks,
Blake Kaz, Richmond VA
Blake,
The original steering system is still available. I just sent 2 cables to
Dave Casper. Yours might have something weird in it though. You can get an
entire system for not much more that 2 cables. Don't replace just one or
you’ll kick yourself later. A setback will only benefit you with very
good props and a very strong motor. 2 inches up on the transom and a 26
chopper will run 78mph the way it is. See if you can find a part number on
the old cable. That will get this started. Let me know what speeds you saw
and with what prop and I can tell you what I would do next.
